Plant part:
Bark

About 45 minIntermediateRecipe science profile

Procedure

  1. Clean the resin of bark and needles; if stiff, let it soften in a warm place.
  2. In a bowl over a water bath heat oil (olive or sunflower) to 60–70 °C and dissolve the resin in it while stirring; impurities settle or are strained through cloth.
  3. Add beeswax and stir until dissolved; test the consistency — a drop on a cold saucer should set to a soft salve.
  4. Pour into clean pots, let it set and label. Use thinly on intact skin.

Extraction

Herb:
1 díl pryskyřice na 4 díly oleje a 1 díl včelího vosku objemově
Solvent:
pryskyřice se rozpustí v teplém oleji (60–70 °C), potom vosk
Shelf life:
12 měsíců v chladu a temnu
Target compounds:
diterpenové kyseliny a silice (β-pinen, bornylacetát) přecházejí do oleje; vosk dává konzistenci

Notes

An external folk salve for minor scrapes and cracked skin. Resin can cause contact allergy in sensitive people — patch-test a small area first. Not for the eyes, not on open wounds.

Why it works

Fir resin is a mix of diterpene acids and volatile oil that dissolve in oil and, with wax, form a protective film; the balsam's traditional 'healing' reputation has a long history among Indigenous peoples of North America, but clinical proof is lacking.
