Lymphatic heaviness and swelling sensation

'Lymph cleansing' and 'draining' are phrases from alternative texts, not from the herbals; the old tradition knew the spring cure, when after winter people ate bitter and green — young stinging nettle, dandelion, cleavers. The feeling of 'tightness' after winter was what it answered.

The catalogue lists seven species here: stinging nettle, dandelion, cleavers, field horsetail, red clover and the leaves of raspberry and blackberry. Nettle, dandelion and cleavers are the classic spring herbs of Central European tradition; they are here because they were eaten and drunk in spring, not because they 'cleanse' anything.

The lymphatic system cannot be 'cleansed' and an infusion does not reach it; what actually works with lymph is muscle movement, breathing and, for swelling, manual lymphatic drainage and compression. The feeling of lightness after a spring change of diet is real, but it belongs to the gut and to the water a person suddenly drinks.

Nettle and dandelion increase urine output, which people feel as 'draining'. It is a short-term effect not to be confused with treating swelling — and people with heart or kidney disease should not experiment even with a home diuretic.

Swelling of one limb that arose over days always needs an examination: it may be a thrombosis or a blockage of lymphatic drainage, for instance after surgery or radiotherapy. Swelling with fever and redness may be an infection and belongs with a doctor at once.

An enlarged lymph node that is hard, painless and has not gone after three weeks, especially with night sweats or weight loss, belongs with your GP. Neither herbal tea nor a 'detox' is an examination, and delay is costly here.
