What the tradition means

Sage against sweating is the best-known traditional advice in this field, and the catalogue lists common sage here alongside seven other species — lady's mantle, yarrow, lemon balm, English lavender, common hawthorn, great mullein and red clover.

Red clover came to the fore only in modern times, for its plant compounds resembling oestrogen. That is no longer herbal tradition but the supplement market, and it is worth keeping the two apart.

What research says

For phytoestrogens the trial results are inconsistent and any effect small. More important is that 'plant-based' does not mean 'risk-free': substances with hormonal activity are not suitable for everyone, and with a history of a hormone-dependent tumour they are approached with particular caution.

Hot flushes have documented treatments, including non-hormonal ones, that are decided with a doctor. The choice between them is a matter for consultation, not self-treatment.

When not to hesitate

Any bleeding after the menopause needs an examination, always and without delay — it is a symptom one does not wait out.

Also discuss palpitations, new severe headaches and a sudden worsening of mood or sleep with a doctor. If you have been treated for a hormone-sensitive tumour, check every plant product with your oncologist.
