A nettle in the window against lightning, a sprig of bay over the door, a dandelion wreath on a child's head — the protective plant is one of the oldest layers of folk culture, and it always stands at a threshold: door, window, cradle, grave. It is not about effect; it is a sign that someone is watching over the place.

The catalogue lists four species from two continents under this topic: stinging nettle and dandelion from Central European custom, bay laurel from the Mediterranean, where it guarded the house against lightning and evil, and Mexican tarragon, which on the Day of the Dead guards the path of the souls. Each carries the symbol of its own culture, and the text does not blend them.

Science does not study protective plants as protection but as symbols — and there it has something to say: anthropology shows that a ritual at the threshold lowers the anxiety of uncertainty by giving the uncontrollable a shape. The effect is real, and it is in the person, not in the plant.

Some customs have a practical core: nettle in stored grain repels insects, bay in the flour bin deters moths, marigolds in the bed suppress nematodes — part of the reputation may come from there. Protection against lightning, the evil eye or illness has no evidence, and the catalogue records it as belief, not as a property.

A sprig over the door harms no one. Harm begins when the protective ritual replaces what actually protects: vaccination, a lock, a smoke alarm, a visit to the doctor. Amulet and medicine are not in conflict until the amulet becomes the reason not to take the medicine.

Do not give plants as protection to children in the cot or the mouth — dried flowers and leaves are a choking and allergy risk. And anyone who sells protection for money and escalates the threats ('without another session it will come back') is not protecting but extorting; that is a matter for the family, possibly the police, not for a herb.
