Physical symptom
Skin after sun
Soothing after overheating; second-degree burns need a doctor.
What the tradition means
After overheating the tradition cools and moistens: a cloth soaked in an infusion, a mucilaginous decoction, a milk compress. The seven species the catalogue lists here are the whole European soothing set — German chamomile, pot marigold, common mallow, plantain, English lavender and lemon balm.
The point is relief that day, not repairing the skin. The tradition never claimed more under this topic.
What research says
Sunburn is DNA damage in skin cells. Nothing applied afterwards undoes it — cooling and hydration ease the pain and tightness, but have no effect on the later risk.
Only prevention is documented, and it is dull: shade in the strongest hours, clothing, a hat and sunscreen in a sufficient amount. Note also that some substances increase sensitivity to light — for herbs where this is documented, it is written directly on the card.
When cooling is not enough
Blisters over a large area, a burnt face or genitals, and sunburn in an infant belong with a doctor, not under a compress.
Watch especially for symptoms that are not about the skin: dizziness, vomiting, chills or confusion after a day in the sun can mean the body is overheating — there, fluids and cooling of the whole body are what matters, and quickly.
