Metabolism - gentle support
Traditional comfort framing only; seek medical care for acute or severe symptoms.
What the tradition means
'Supporting the metabolism' is a modern turn of phrase, not a category from the herbals. The tradition spoke more concretely — of appetite, of bitters before a meal, of spring nettle after winter — and the catalogue lists eleven species here that belong to those habits.
The catalogue therefore treats it as a description of traditional use. The word metabolism in the topic's name is not meant as a promise of an effect on body weight or blood sugar.
What research says
Metabolism is not a speed that could be set with a drink. What measurably changes it is the composition of the diet, movement, muscle mass and sleep — exactly the factors that supplement marketing leaves out.
In diabetes caution is due for the opposite reason: some plant products can affect blood sugar, and combined with diabetes medication that means a risk of hypoglycaemia, not an advantage. Do not adjust treatment according to a herb.
When it belongs with a doctor
Excessive thirst, frequent urination, unintended weight loss or, conversely, unexplained weight gain need an examination, not a herbal cure.
If you are already treated for diabetes or a thyroid disorder, check every new product first. Trembling, sweating, confusion and weakness can be signs of low blood sugar and are dealt with immediately.
